Idaho sugar industry urges support for glyphosate protections, DEQ funding and workforce development

At a meeting of the Idaho House Agriculture Affairs Committee, representatives of the state's sugar beet growers and Amalgamated Sugar Company described the industry's economic footprint, production processes and policy priorities, and urged lawmakers to address permitting delays, workforce shortages and litigation risk tied to glyphosate labeling.

Zach Patterson, president of the Snake River Sugar Beet Growers Association, told the committee that sugar beets are a key domestic source of sugar and described planting, harvest and storage practices. "I want clean water, I want clean air," Patterson said, adding that growers try "their best to be good stewards of the land." He told the committee that beet production can represent roughly half of U.S. domestic sugar supply in some years and that domestic consumption requires imports to meet total demand.

Christina Hardesty, vice president, general counsel and secretary of Amalgamated Sugar Company, provided a factory-level overview and said Amalgamated's cooperative of about 700 growers operates three processing facilities in Idaho, Oregon and Washington.
