Shelter director reports higher adoptions, steady donations; one part-time K-9 vacancy remains

At the Carbon County Animal Shelter Advisory Commission meeting on June 3, 2025, Tom, director of the Carbon County Animal Shelter, gave the monthly director’s report, saying the shelter recorded more adoptions in May and received a large food donation from FreshPak.
The report said the shelter received $2,736 in food donations during April after FreshPak provided a pallet of food, and $5,141 in food donations in May. Supplies recorded for April and May were $20,091 and $2,658 respectively. Tom said the shelter has one vacant part-time K-9 officer position and that an application had arrived and would be followed up with an interview.
Why it matters: donation levels and staffing affect the shelter’s capacity to care for and place animals. Advisory-commission members asked about equipment and facility repairs that could affect operations.
Tom provided intake and outcome counts for two months: in April the shelter reported 22 kennels in use at the start of the month and 16 at month’s end, seven adoptions, one owner surrender, eight returns to owner and a peak concurrent care of 22 dogs. In May the shelter reported 16 kennels in use at the start of the month and 15 at month’s end, nine adoptions, two owner surrenders, four returns to owner, nine dogs housed in lieu of shelter and a peak concurrent care of 18 dogs. Police-related calls totaled seven in April and 11 in May; after-hours calls were six in April and nine in May.
Tom said staff is waiting for installation of security cameras and for repairs to a ceiling in the kennel area; the shelter also ordered the last three kennel doors needed to complete that project. He described the roof leak as intermittent and said it had produced a discolored spot in the ceiling that could lead to mold if not addressed.
The commission did not take formal action on staffing or budget items during the meeting. The group noted a pending yard-sale fundraising request awaiting approval by county commissioners and said it would pursue a storage unit if the yard sale proceeds as planned.
Tom said, "FreshPak was kind enough to give us another big pallet of food, which all the dogs love." The comment was part of his overview of donations and supplies.
The commission set its next regular meeting for August 2025 at 6 p.m. at 44 Susquehanna Street in Bimthorpe.
