Demetrius “Dee” Parker told the House subcommittee MDOT is developing a digital vision to move design and utility information into cloud-based digital models.
“We're looking at digital vision to where that's all on an iPad... that's all out in the cloud to where all we have to do is say, I wanna know where DTE's utilities are at along that 94 to where that will automatically come up,” Parker said.
Parker described a completed 3‑D pilot (referred to in the hearing as a 3‑D project on I‑696) that MDOT ran with industry and consultants; he said the pilot was successful and that MDOT plans an expanded 3‑D modeling project in the Bay Region in 2026 or 2027 that could cover bridges and associated road sections. MDOT staff said the effort will draw on emerging tools including 3‑D modeling and artificial intelligence to centralize utility location and related data.
Why it matters: Over time, a digital utility and design platform could reduce the need to send paper plans to utilities and lower the chance of field conflicts, omissions and rework. Committee members asked for further detail on planned pilots and timelines.
Ending: MDOT said the digital vision is ongoing; pilots to date were limited but deemed successful, and staff will expand modeling work to additional projects in coming years.
