Amy, a borough staff member who presented the report, told the assembly the item followed work sessions on May 8 and May 29 and summarized the school district's request and prior discussion. "After our discussions at the work sessions on both May 8 and May 29, the assembly has discussed the pros and cons of funding. The school district ask of $12,979,556.50. And now, after if there's any additional discussion, we should be ready to vote," Amy said.
Assembly Member Beau said the assembly should move from a reactive to a proactive posture on school funding. "We seem to be in a reactive dire crisis mode when this topic comes up in this funding item," Beau said, adding he would support the request but urged earlier planning for the next several years.
Mayor Arndt placed the item in broader state context, saying the state shifted from forward funding of education years ago and that subsequent actions left local governments in recurring budget crisis. "It was before the Dunleavy administration. And the Dunleavy administration, when it came in, swiped that money. And we've been in crisis mode ever since," Arndt said. Another assembly member, Dave, criticized the governor's office in stronger terms during the discussion.
Roll-call votes recorded: Ames (yes); Griffin (yes); Johnson (yes); LeDoux (yes); Sherritt (yes); Smiley (yes); Whiteside (yes). The motion to adopt Resolution FY2026-01 passed 7-0.
