Mayor Jane Houston proclaimed May 2025 as Historic Preservation Month and the city’s historic preservation officer announced public engagement opportunities tied to the city’s first citywide historic preservation plan.
Allison Brake, the city’s historic preservation officer, told the council the city will release a public draft of its first-ever preservation plan and host two events in July: a pop-up at the San Marcos Libraries (10 a.m.–noon) and a community workshop on July 16 from 5:30–7:30 p.m. at the San Marcos Activity Center. “We will be hosting 2 events in July that coincide with the release of the public draft of our preservation plan, which is the city's first ever, document that will help to guide preservation policy here in the city for the next 5 to 10 years,” Brake said.
Brake and others at the meeting described preservation as a tool for thoughtful growth, neighborhood revitalization and sustaining community character. The proclamation text states the city values “the diverse histories of all” and encourages residents to “discover, reflect on, and connect with the places that define our shared local history.”
No regulatory action or funding allocation was recorded on the item in the transcript; the record indicates the city is scheduling outreach associated with the draft plan.
