The proclamation said the city will observe Memorial Day in May 2025 and noted a public ceremony at the Hays County Veterans Memorial at 10 a.m. Monday, May 26, 2025. The mayor’s proclamation called on “all persons of the city of San Marcos to join our fellow Americans in pausing for 1 minute at 3 p.m. on Memorial Day ... to reflect upon those and honor those who died.”
A city staff member who addressed the council said the May 26 program will include recitation of the names of Hays County residents who died in military service and that retired Lt. Col. Jessica Dunn will deliver the keynote address. The staff member also said members of local veterans groups will lay wreaths and recite names. In the event of rain, the staff member said the program would move to the San Marcos Activity Center.
The proclamation text presented to the council recited Memorial Day’s origin following the Civil War and described the holiday as a national day of remembrance established in 1868. The mayor and speakers thanked veterans’ organizations and families in attendance.
