BRN launches clinical facility approval portal as step toward publishing clinical site data

Board staff told the Board of Registered Nursing May 28 that the agency launched a Clinical Facility Approval (CFA) portal on May 1 to collect standardized commitments from facilities that provide clinical rotations to nursing programs, an early step toward public posting of clinical placement data.
Yvonne Leonard Taps, assistant executive officer, said the CFA portal was developed in response to a 2019 California State Audit recommendation requiring clearer public information about clinical placements. The portal replaces an earlier paper‑based form (ID‑18) and provides a consistent way for schools and clinical facilities to declare the availability of placements and for BRN to collect structured data.
Board members asked whether the CFA includes placement counts or identifies which programs use particular placements. Staff said the CFA captures facility approvals and commitments (the formal assurance that a facility will accept rotations) but does not yet report usage counts or the list of students placed; those data elements are planned for future releases. Taps said the portal is intended to be the first step in a larger effort to post data to improve planning and transparency.
She also reported ongoing work on other strategic priorities documented in the BRN strategic plan, including temporary licensing and improved data sharing with system partners. The CFA portal and related trainings were presented as information only.
