Desert Research Institute offers state-funded help as Lander County begins mandated water-plan process

The Desert Research Institute (DRI) staff briefed Lander County commissioners on May 22 about a state-funded effort to produce county water plans required under Nevada statute. DRI said the work is funded through the Nevada Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and offered technical support, mapping and public-engagement help to prepare Lander County's plan.
DRI's presentation explained county water plans must inventory water sources (surface, groundwater and effluent, where applicable), analyze existing and expected demand, assess quantity and quality, and propose actions if water is insufficient to meet projected needs. DRI said the statute requires counties to revise plans every 10 years and that the state's target date for completion is July 1, 2029.
Alexandra Lutz (DRI) said the institute will provide maps, plots and templates and can assist counties with workshop facilitation, data assembly and grant support. Pam Harrington, Lander County natural-resources officer, said Lander could be a template county and welcomed the technical assistance. Commissioners voted to work with DRI and to accept the state-funded assistance to begin preparing the Lander County water plan.
