The Village of Jackson Park and Recreation Commission discussed possible membership fees for the Jackson Community Center but took no formal action. Staff said the membership review is part of broader planning tied to new spaces and programs created by the recent renovation.
Parks and Recreation staff described the current membership as covering the fitness center only, with the remainder of the building available for free use except for instructor-led programs. “Right now for the most part our memberships include our fitness center and that's pretty much all our membership covers,” the staff member said. Staff said they want to expand open-use opportunities — such as open gym, the art room, and pool tables — while also improving building security through a front-desk check-in or payment system.
Staff presented comparisons to other communities: Hartford charges $10 per year; Port Washington charges $25 per year for residents; Grafton Senior Center charges $20 per year; and West Bend uses a per-activity fee model (for example, $3 to use open gym or the art room). The commission discussed balancing nominal fees to cover supervision and equipment costs without discouraging use. A commissioner said some residents will object because they already pay taxes that support the facility but added that a modest fee could be acceptable if it remains low and if staff gauges user response.
Staff asked for feedback and said they would continue to evaluate available rooms and services and present a formal membership recommendation at a future meeting in June or July. No motion or vote on membership fees was recorded in the transcript.
