The United Nations political mission in Libya released a report that sets out four options to break a political stalemate that has prevented national elections since 2021, the UN said on Friday.
The briefing cited the report from the advisory committee, which presented options including: holding presidential and legislative elections simultaneously; holding parliamentary elections first followed by adoption of a permanent constitution; adopting a permanent constitution prior to elections; or establishing a political dialogue committee. The UN special representative described the report as a “launching point for a countrywide conversation.”
The briefing said the special representative has presented a summary to Libyan leaders in both the east and west of the country and will seek feedback from Libya’s wider public, political parties, youth and women’s groups, civil society, security actors and community leaders.
UN officials said the next steps include public consultations and polling aimed at building broader consensus on the path forward to end the transitional phase.
