County public works staff told the board that MnDOT’s Trunk Highway 52 southbound grading project closed the County Road 50 intersections on both sides of 52 and constructed a new gravel segment tying nearby local roads together, leaving County Road 50 as a dead-end on the northeast and southwest sides of Highway 52. Staff said Mineola Township requested inspections and replacement of culverts in poor condition, removal of the old pavement, and addition of gravel surfacing on the turnback sections. The township also raised concerns about load capacity on the southwest segment because of existing heavy commercial traffic.
A county presentation said additional gravel surfacing is expected to address the township’s load-capacity concerns. Staff recommended proceeding with the turnback process; the county said the resolution will become effective after construction activities are completed and the turnback section is appropriately recorded, at which point a two-year maintenance period will begin. The board did not resolve, during the meeting, whether the county or the township will perform maintenance during that two-year period and indicated that maintenance arrangements could be determined later and returned for formal approval.
The motion to adopt the resolution and begin the turnback process was moved and seconded and carried on a voice vote. Chair (name not specified in the transcript) thanked Mineola Township and public works staff for their work.
