County administrator: first-responder screening grant awarded; strategic-planning and staffing updates reported

County Administrator Amber updated the Knox County Commission on June 10 that the county was awarded a first-responder cardiovascular and cancer screening grant covering correctional, law-enforcement, detective and communications staff; the award amount will be confirmed next week and the service will be provided via a mobile unit to allow on-shift access.
Amber reported progress on strategic planning work with the Midcoast Council of Governments, including two upcoming meetings (an internal meeting on June 16 and an external meeting with towns on June 23) and said the county will receive a compiled list of services as part of the COG work that could inform outreach and the county’s strategic plan.
Human resources and staffing: Amber said the county has recently posted for a communications director, hired two full-time dispatchers and an airport maintenance worker, and filled a food-service specialist position at the jail. The county also completed a compensation and job-description study and expects to present recommendations and cost impacts in July. Amber described an active program of employee wellness and professional-development efforts, including an FTO (field-training officer) program at the jail and ergonomics audits for dispatch and corrections staff.
GIS and county services: Commissioners and staff discussed the county’s GIS office work to map municipal cemeteries and efforts to coordinate with town sextons. Amber said the county’s call center and outreach to stakeholders — including fire chiefs and select board chairs — are priorities as the county implements strategic-plan work. The commission discussed a potential county-level 411 information service to reach residents without internet access; Amber noted costs would need to be researched.
Public-safety and SMRT walkthrough: The commission heard that SMRT is conducting facility walkthroughs to identify collaborative opportunities across county facilities; a report is expected after completion of the walkthroughs.
Why it matters: The screening grant covers first responders’ health services and may reduce barriers by using a mobile unit during shift changes. Strategic planning and the compiled county service list could change how the county directs outreach and referral efforts; recent hires and HR work affect county service capacity.
