Erie hires Matthew Balcon as historic preservation planner; start date June 16

Jacqueline Spry said Matthew "comes with just a wealth of experience," noting his connections to state preservation work and prior roles. Commissioners discussed his background in art history and higher-education administration; Spry said Balcon served as a dean in an art department (referenced as Point Park in the meeting) and has long experience with preservation organizations, including work with Preservation Pittsburgh. The commission said his state connections — Spry said he "sits on the SHPO board" — will be valuable for the city's projects.
Commissioners noted the hire means the HRC will soon have additional openings: Balcon's resignation will create a mayoral appointment vacancy and the Article 7 amendments call for expanding the commission's membership. The commission said it will hold elections for leadership at its July meeting after Balcon's resignation is formalized.
