Board tables vote on policy 0164.1 after committee review; member raises free‑speech concerns

“Committee members recommend that the full board table this evening's vote on this policy until after the board's July break,” Policy Committee Chair Branch Stewart told the board. The committee said it will resume work over the summer and return with further consideration at a later meeting.
Board member Verdi sharply criticized the draft policy and the committee’s handling of it, saying the proposal would “stifle essential open and robust dialogue” and was “ripe for misuse.” Verdi said her views had not been welcomed in committee and urged the board to reject policy 0164.1 in its current form: “My deep concern lies with the fact that this policy in its current form stifles essential open and robust dialogue and is ripe for misuse,” she said.
The committee report also said it would revisit the district strategic plan after the board’s July break and explore stakeholder engagement initiatives related to policy work. No formal vote to adopt policy 0164.1 occurred; the board accepted the committee’s recommendation to table action.
