Maury County Fire Department leaders told commissioners on July 6 that May was the busiest month in department history, with notable increases in vehicle extrications, house fires and water rescues.
“May was extremely busy. It's our busiest month we've ever had,” Chief Shots (Maury County Fire Department) said, noting vehicle accidents and extrications were up and that the department’s call volume was higher year over year. The chief described mutual‑aid responses, including assistance in Spring Hill and from the City of Mount Pleasant, and highlighted recent rescues where responders were able to prevent larger fires.
The department is awaiting delivery of a custom swift‑water rescue boat. Chief Shots said the manufacturer is producing custom units and that the county’s boat is in the production pipeline; he said there is no firm delivery date but staff hopes to receive it before the fall flooding season.
Commissioners did not take formal action on the report. The chief said the department plans to recognize two rescuers who saved a disabled person who entered the water, possibly at a full commission meeting if they can attend.
No budgetary figures or firm delivery dates for the rescue boat were provided at the meeting.
