Maury County approves 2024-25 budget, moves $1.4 million Columbia Library renovation into current year; senior center funding reduced after public comments

The Maury County Board of Commissioners on June 25 adopted the countyand school budgets for fiscal 2024-25, moved a $1.4 million appropriation for Columbia Library renovations into the current fiscal year and, after extended public comment and discussion, reduced a proposed $610,000 appropriation for senior-center renovations to $300,000.

The action comes after public testimony from senior-center leaders and patrons who described failing heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems and restrooms that they said did not meet Americans with Disabilities Act standards. Commissioner Gabe Sumners moved to appropriate $1.4 million for the Columbia Library renovation in the current year; Commissioner Howard seconded the motion and it passed. Sumners later offered the successful amendment to cut the senior-center appropriation to $300,000; Commissioner Brothers seconded that amendment.
