The presenter said the district receives roughly $224,000 per month in federal reimbursements and is in the second year of qualification for the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP), which allows campuses that qualify to offer free breakfast and lunch to all enrolled students for up to four years based on a base year calculation.
On pricing, staff said the proposed contract includes a 4.5% increase compared with the prior year. "What we do is we look at the CPI that's released by the government," a district speaker said, describing how increases are negotiated; the speaker added the district and provider aimed for a modest increase so the vendor and district break even.
Board members asked about the consistency of annual increases and the CEP renewal process; staff said the district typically sees increases around 3–4% and explained that CEP status is based on a base year and that campuses can piggyback eligibility if an individual campus would otherwise fall below the threshold.
Administrators recommended renewing the contract with Southwest Food Service Excellence LLC. A board member moved to approve the renewal; the motion was seconded and passed 5‑0.
