Committee approves Interval Data Systems energy-optimization engagement for new school

The Stoughton Building Committee approved bringing Interval Data Systems (IDS) onto the project team as a subconsultant to Vertex to assist with building system automation, commissioning and post-occupancy energy optimization.

Project presenters said IDS’s work during design and especially in the first months after occupancy has led to measurable reductions in energy use intensity on recent projects and can generate five- to six-figure operational savings in the first year of occupancy. IDS will help tune HVAC and control schedules, assist with contractor coordination, and support rebate validation (Mass Save and similar programs).

The committee discussed the scope and timing: the design-phase engagement and a post-occupancy support period that includes warranty support. IDS’s base design-phase cost presented was $119,250; the committee approved an amendment that adds a standard 10% markup (total authorization $131,175) to have IDS on the team through initial warranty support. Committee members flagged optional ongoing monitoring services as an operational expense for future consideration; those optional services were not included in this vote.

The motion to authorize the Vertex amendment (to add IDS under Vertex’s contract) was moved and seconded in committee and passed by roll call. Presenters noted the committee could later request extended warranty or monitoring support if needed; they also discussed the possibility of tolling limitations (for example, in a prolonged occupancy delay) if extraordinary circumstances prevented timely post-occupancy commissioning.
