Dane County zoning staff warn applicants about fraudulent invoices using county logo

Zoning and Land Regulation Committee staff warned applicants on June 10 that a phishing campaign is using Dane County agenda information to send fraudulent invoices to people who have active land-use applications.
Roger Lane, Dane County zoning administrator, told the committee the phony emails come from planning.DaneCounty@USA.com and include detailed applicant information — zoning numbers, parcel locations and an invoice bearing the Dane County logo. “This is all fraudulent, and I just want to make sure everybody is aware that this is a scam, and they are to disregard this,” Lane said. He provided a county contact number and told applicants they could call him at 266-9078 for questions.
Committee members asked staff to coordinate with county information technology and corporation counsel to trace the source and limit harm. Supervisor Michelle Doolin asked staff to notify committee members and to circulate a summary of actions taken so supervisors can respond to constituent calls. "After you talk to corp counsel and find out what's going on, could you just send us kind of a resolution of what's going on? The committee on what actions are being taken to prevent this," Doolin said.
Lane said staff were working on the issue and would follow up as information becomes available. The committee did not take formal action on the warning; the announcement was made during the meeting's public-comment segment.
