County staff told commissioners that Canal Place, the county's heritage-area partner, is leading local planning for America250 and will convene a meeting to gather topics and public interest.
Staff said the federal America250 initiative and a similar state process exist and that Canal Place will help organize local heritage-area input and solicit topics from municipalities and community groups. Staff said a convening meeting is expected in the near future but no date had been set. (Speaker 2)
"They're gonna be convening a meeting here in the near future. They haven't set a date yet, but it's coming up. They're gonna ask to have the meeting, and people who have interest in topics can submit those topics," Speaker 2 said.
Commissioners and staff discussed seeking buy-in from municipalities so events would not conflict and so participation could be spread across dates and locations. The meeting included mention of community members such as Michael Mudge, who has sought an America250 committee, and conversation that Canal Place will coordinate outreach. (Speakers 1, 2)
No formal county committee was established at the meeting and no vote was taken. Staff said they would pass comments to Canal Place and would encourage municipal coordination and community input.
Ending: Commissioners asked staff to relay interest from residents and local historians to Canal Place ahead of the convening so local topics and events can be coordinated when the meeting is scheduled. (Speaker 2)
