Duchesne County emergency management briefed commissioners on an active wildfire near Rock Fork in New Canyon on June 9.
Staff reported the fire burning in rugged, north-facing timber, estimated between 5 and 20 acres. Firefighters used bucket water drops and a retardant drop; a type 1 and a type 2 helicopter were on scene alongside two hand crews, and another type 2 helicopter was ordered. The terrain is steep and difficult to access, prompting reliance on aircraft and hand crews.
Officials said satellite imagery at one point showed about 20 acres, but crews working the fire thought it was closer to 5–10 acres. County staff said no structures were threatened and Highway 191 remained open. A prescribed burn to box the fire in — roughly a 60-acre burn — was discussed as a possible tactic depending on conditions; if executed, the county expects to supply additional resources such as type 6 engines.
Lightning was believed to be the ignition source. County staff asked residents to report any smoke sightings as the region faces continued dry lightning storms and elevated fire risk in ridge areas north of Altamont and Tabby.
