County says radio tower project will break ground soon; new grant will add state-compatible base stations

County staff told the Public Safety Standing Committee on June 6 that ground-breaking for the last radio tower site is imminent and that equipment installation will follow as shelters and infrastructure are completed.
Staff said they expect to begin moving equipment into the courthouse and provisioning generators and HVAC units in the near term. “We should be breaking ground shortly on our last [tower],” one county official said.
The county also received a round-2 grant that will fund two base stations, officials said, and those base stations will be multi-band capable to interoperate with the future Wiscom state radio network. “We funded 2 base stations with that grant…and those base stations would allow us to operate on the future Wiscom network,” staff said.
Why it matters: the radio project supports countywide interoperable communications for police, fire and EMS and lays groundwork for eventual statewide compatibility through Wiscom.
Next steps: county staff and vendors will continue site construction, equipment provisioning and subscriber-radio work with the county administrator and vendors; additional briefings will follow as shelters, cabling and generator provisioning progress.
