Planning staff representative Terry Speth said the recent zoning and height‑district changes would not have prevented that particular building, though the design guidelines adopted as part of the plan package in June could have given the city a stronger position in negotiations.
Councilmember Sekowsky said motions addressing Public Storage were on the Planning Commission agenda the next day and that both a zoning ordinance and a separate ordinance addressing siting and design standards would be forwarded to PLUM. Councilmembers urged expedited consideration to avoid similar projects elsewhere in the city.
No final council action was taken at the meeting on this item; councilmembers directed staff and committees to pursue ordinance and design changes and indicated the matter will proceed through the Planning Commission and PLUM.
