Committee hears bill to extend heart-and-lung protections to all Nevada peace officers

Assembly Bill 93, heard June 1 by the Senate Finance Committee, would expand Nevada’s heart-and-lung coverage to all peace officers statewide.
Assemblymember Brian Hibbits, sponsor, described the bill and the fiscal request: a Department of Public Safety appropriation for fiscal year 2026 of $3,235 and $8,129 for fiscal year 2027 to cover annual physicals for newly covered officers.
Supporters included school district police representatives, statewide law enforcement organizations and local lodge and supervisory groups. Nathaniel Wall of the Clark County School District said the district supported expanding coverage for school police. Rick McCann, representing the Nevada Association of Public Safety Officers and the Nevada Law Enforcement Coalition, testified in support. Don Hicks, representing state correctional and forensics officers, said the group supports AB93. Paul Lunkowitz, president of FOP Nevada Lodge 21, asked the committee to "vote yes" and said "All peace officers deserve to be covered by this bill." David Ballantyne of the Police Officers Association of Clark County Schools highlighted the bill’s public-safety and life-saving implications.
Callers and witnesses representing managers, city marshals and police supervisors also registered support. No opposition was recorded at the hearing. The committee closed the hearing after receiving the testimony.
