District custodial representative urges higher wages; community speaker backs request

During the June 9 public comment period at the Jersey Shore Area School District Board meeting, Jason White, who identified himself as the staff representative for custodial and maintenance workers, urged the board to offer district custodial staff "respect and dignity" in bargaining and to propose a "livable wage." White said more than half of the employees he represents qualify for SNAP benefits and described district custodial and maintenance staff as skilled workers who could earn significantly more in the private sector.
"These are family providers who ask for the dignity of working to provide," White said, asking the board to "keep this in mind and make a fair offer" when bargaining returns to the table.
Community member Bob Pryor of Mifflin Township spoke in support, saying custodial and maintenance employees respond during storms and provide essential services and that their request was not unreasonable.
Board members acknowledged the comments but did not take action during public comment; the meeting later moved to scheduled agenda votes.
