A lawn certification subcommittee reported progress narrowing definitions for "native" versus "non-native" species and said it expects to present an outline of a pilot program to city staff and the commission once the water department reviews the pilot-year funding request.
The communications subcommittee discussed fall 2025 magazine content and prioritized promoting composting, leaf-recycling days and a "sustainable Halloween" campaign that focuses on reusing costumes, composting pumpkins and reducing plastic. Commissioners noted a local Ridwell drop-off partnership at some schools and suggested highlighting thrift stores and Goodwill locations for low-cost materials.
Leaf recycling and organics events
Staff and commissioners said the leaf-recycling effort typically charges a small fee per trip (a $5-per-trip figure was cited for a recent year), and the city subsidized collection in the prior year with roughly $2,000 from each city (reported in the meeting as a subsidy). Commissioners discussed spreading dates over multiple weekends to increase access.
Newsletter and other updates
