Aberdeen School Board honors state track and golf champions and Girls State delegate

The Aberdeen School District 06-1 board opened its June 9 meeting with recognition of student accomplishments: state track champions, athletes who set or broke school records at Howard Wood, and the Central High School girls golf team, which won the state tournament.

Students recognized included a boys 300-meter/hurdles state champion (referred to in the meeting as Kaizen/Tyson), Taryn Hermanson (shot put winner and school record holder), and Maya (high hurdles and school record holder at Howard Wood). Student speakers thanked coaches and described training and family support. One student said, “I worked pretty hard for this… I’ve been doing track since elementary school, and I’m pretty proud of what I’ve done so far,” and another credited offseason training and mental preparation.

The board also recognized Adrienne White, who described her selection and campaigns at Girls State in Vermillion and said she was elected lieutenant governor. White told the board the week-long program exposed her to leadership and state government processes and that she may pursue related activities in the future.

Central High School’s girls golf team and individual medalist Olivia Braun were also honored. Coach Zimmerman and players emphasized teamwork, a tightened mental approach to competition and the role of community support. The coach noted underclassmen participation at state and credited many staff, parents and community golf-course partners for their assistance.

Why it matters: the recognitions highlight student achievement in athletics and civic leadership, and they were presented publicly to record school and community recognition ahead of summer events.

No formal board action was required for these recognitions; they were part of the meeting’s opening ‘good news’ segment.
