Sioux Falls School District seeks state waiver to grant high school math credit to middle schoolers

The Sioux Falls School District 49-5 Board of Education opened a public hearing and voted to direct the district to pursue a waiver from the South Dakota Department of Education that would allow a limited number of middle school students to earn high school credit for Algebra 1, accelerated geometry and/or accelerated Algebra 2 before grade 9.
If approved by the state, the waiver would take effect July 1 and run through February, district staff said. Kristen Granager told the board the waiver has been used for many years “to support students who demonstrate advanced proficiency in mathematics.” The board heard no public testimony during the hearing.
Board members then moved to acknowledge the hearing and direct administration to submit the waiver application. The motion was approved by voice vote; no roll-call tally was recorded in the transcript.
Board members described the waiver as part of the district’s broader pathways for academically advanced students. One board member, Murn, commented that the item “proves the wonderful pathways that Sioux Falls School District offers all of our kids.”
The district will submit the waiver to the South Dakota Department of Education and await its decision. The board’s action authorized staff to proceed with the application; state approval is required before credit can be granted under the requested terms.
