HR reports 71 countywide openings; sheriff's office openings down from last year

Lexi Pack of Kootenai County Human Resources reported to the Board on June 2 that the county had 71 open positions representing about 67.96 full-time equivalent roles, an 18% decrease from the same period in 2024.
Pack said 19 of the open positions are funded at 50% for fiscal year 2025. The Kootenai County Sheriff's Office had 35 openings; the rest of county departments combined had about 32.96 openings. Pack said the sheriff's office openings are down 27% from last year and that hires were scheduled: two patrol hires expected to start next week, a detention deputy transferring to patrol in July (which would fully staff patrol), two detention deputies starting in July, one in August and another candidate in background checks this week.
Pack said three hires started in the dispatch center this week and additional applicants were in background investigations. Commissioners noted that improved staffing pipelines could reduce overtime pressures in detention and patrol units.
Pack said the open positions are budgeted and the primary short-term financial implication is continued overtime where vacancies remain; she indicated the county is monitoring onboarding and recruitment progress.
