Beauregard Parish School Board adopts FY2026 budget; officials cite tight operating margins
Summary
The board adopted the fiscal 2026 budget on June 10 after confirming public-notice requirements; officials said about 92% of general fund dollars pay salaries and benefits, leaving constrained discretionary funds.
The Beauregard Parish School Board adopted its fiscal year 2026 budget June 10 after completing state public-notice and hearing requirements.
Finance staff said the budget is in place so funds are available when the schools reopen July 1. “We’ve met the state statute for our public hearing,” the staff presenter said during the meeting, referring to the statutory public-notice process required before adoption.
Board members asked how the budget would address recurring facility needs, including roof coatings and air-conditioning repairs. Finance staff explained that about 92% of the district’s general fund is currently consumed by salaries and benefits, leaving roughly 8% for curriculum, supplies and other operational items. That structure, staff said, constrains near-term discretionary spending for capital-like maintenance without using restricted or ad valorem funds.
The district’s unaudited year-end estimates presented in the meeting packet showed about $2 million available to move into reserves from the general fund and roughly $1 million on the ad valorem side, but staff cautioned the numbers are provisional pending the final audit and some outstanding invoices. Staff also said federal disaster reimbursements and insurance proceeds tied to recent storm damage are expected to be routed into reserves and used for targeted roof repairs once formally received.
A board member asked about the state’s “Gator” scholarship program and potential student movement; staff said the parish had 31 applications in May with an estimated six net departures that would affect MFP (Minimum Foundation Program) funding. Budget presenter Miss Ashley said the board can revisit restrictions in the budget revision cycle if funds become available in January.
Motion to adopt the budget was made by Mister Kibito and seconded by Miss Neely; the motion carried.
