Board proposes ad hoc facilities committee to craft comprehensive facilities plan; membership and oversight draw questions

Board members announced an ad hoc facilities committee intended to develop a comprehensive facilities plan for Memphis‑Shelby County Schools (MSCS). The proposed membership list includes board leadership, district staff, elected officials (state and local), planning and urban development experts, philanthropy, community leaders, parent and student representatives, and real estate professionals. Board Member Ote and Vice Chair McKinney described the committee’s aim to gather diverse perspectives on governance, planning, community development, environmental sustainability and facility investments.

Several board members asked for confirmation that committee members would support public education and stressed the committee’s advisory role: the ad hoc body will make recommendations to the board, which retains final decision authority. One board member questioned the inclusion of Representative Mark White (chair of the state house education committee) and asked whether invitations could bring concerns about political motives; other members noted the inclusion of legislative leaders was intended out of respect for their roles in education policy and funding and to facilitate cooperative work.

Staff said the proposed membership roster will be published online after confirmations, and policy requires the board to formally vote on committee membership at a future board meeting. The ad hoc committee will vet candidate members, confirm commitments and return to the board for final approval of membership and a charter. Board members were encouraged to submit additional nominations to the board office.
