Elementary students present 'Plant Factory' project to school committee

A group of Walpole elementary students on June 12 described “Plant Factory,” a student‑led project that grows seedlings at home and sells them at local events to raise money for charities.
Students explained the process of starting seeds in small cups, growing plants at home, and selling items such as cherry and roma tomatoes, zucchini, cucumbers, peppers and basil at the farmer’s market and Walpole Day. Presenters said proceeds are donated to local agencies and that the project teaches entrepreneurship, gardening skills, money management and teamwork.
Committee members asked logistical questions about adult supervision, where sales occur and whether students use proceeds to buy seeds. One committee member suggested including “Budding Entrepreneurs” in the group’s name and another asked whether shirts could be sold at future markets.
The students posed for a photograph with the committee after the presentation.
