Summary
Town meeting approved the FY2026 general fund budget and related salary determinations, moving a $39,013,519 appropriation forward after limited public questions about human-resources and salaries.
The Town of Lakeville on May 19 approved its fiscal 2026 general fund budget, voting to determine elected-officer salaries and to raise and appropriate $39,013,519 for the year running July 1, 2025, through June 30, 2026.
The motion, presented as Article 1 of the annual warrant, was introduced by a member of the meeting and read alongside a supplemental budget document entitled "Supplemental Information FY 2026, Town of Lakeville general fund operating budget detail." Darren Beals, chair of the Finance Committee, recommended approval; the motion then passed by voice vote.
The approved document, read aloud at the meeting, lists total general-fund spending of $37,478,507 and, when combined with other items, the $39,013,519 total cited in the motion. Major line items read by Beals included a $17.29 million operating assessment for the Freetown-Lakeville school district (transportation $352,429), $5.28 million for public safety, $4.67 million in fixed costs (including $2.47 million in group insurance and $1.80 million for Plymouth County retirement), and $948,062 in debt service.
During discussion, resident Noel Rillo asked about the human-resources salary line. Town accountant Mike Ellis provided a breakdown, saying: "The breakdown is $97,920 for the director ... and $57,551 for a payroll specialist." That explanation resolved the question and the meeting moved to a vote.
The moderator handled procedural questions about reading the budget and held line-item discussions until after Beals finished reading the warrant packet. The Finance Committee recommended approval for the budget.
The budget vote followed the special town meeting and procedural votes that authorized the moderator to determine certain two-thirds and majority calls by voice and by card, subject to immediate challenge and a counted vote if requested.
