WASHINGTON CITY — Washington City Mayor and the City Council recognized Washington City High School’s baseball team and Coach Abbott during the June council meeting, inviting the coach and several senior players to the dais to accept congratulations from elected leaders.
Coach Abbott described the season as a "special" run, noting the team went into the state tournament as the No. 8 seed and that many regular-season losses were close games. "Going in as the underdog in the 8 seed, lowest seed going into the state tournament ... those seniors and the leadership ... they weren't gonna let any of those underclassmen feel like that again," Abbott said.
Several seniors spoke about what they will take from the season. One player, identified in the meeting as Stan, said the season’s best part was winning state after moving to the area during his junior year. "To never give up and to always put my all in everything that I do," Stan said when asked for a life lesson from the season. Another senior, Jackson, described being part of the program and noted future plans to play college baseball and to serve a mission trip.
Coach Abbott thanked the community and school administration for support during the season and said the program benefits from robust turnout at home games. "The community is great ... we're grateful to be part of a great community," Abbott said.
Mayor and council members praised the players and coaches and took photographs with the team on the chamber dais. No formal council action was associated with the recognition.
