The Lake County Board of County Commissioners voted June 5 to approve an intergovernmental agreement with Lake County School District R‑1 to assign one sheriff’s deputy to serve as a School Resource Officer (SRO).
Sheriff Spuckman updated the board that the agreement has been developed in consultation with the district and vetted through legal review. The agreement establishes the SRO program’s goals: increase safety, reduce criminal activity on school property, provide pro‑active law enforcement services, and improve collaboration between the district and law enforcement. The program will follow guidance from the National Association of School Resource Officers.
Spuckman said the parties have agreed on a job description and that, if an assigned deputy is not already certified as an SRO, the individual will have up to a year to obtain required training. The school district agreed to stay engaged in the hiring process; the board and sheriff described a joint committee for candidate selection and oversight.
A commissioner asked whether only personnel trained as SROs could serve in the role; Spuckman confirmed the requirement and the one‑year training allowance. The motion to approve the IGA passed unanimously at the meeting.
The county and district will finalize the hiring process and committee once the IGA is fully executed. The agreement sets expectations for the SRO’s duties and reporting but did not include new ongoing county budget commitments discussed publicly at the meeting.
