The board heard a presentation from Dr. Afifa Abdul Ghani, vice chair of the Green Advisory Committee, who said the committee unanimously recommended that Broward County Public Schools prepare standards and a vulnerability assessment that would identify campuses most at risk from flooding and extreme heat. “Broward County Public Schools is the largest landholder in the county,” Ghani told the board, “and the district can lead by example through thoughtful design.”
The board discussion that followed focused on timing and resources. Superintendent Dr. Vance Hepburn told board members the district’s facilities condition assessment (FCA) will be presented later in June and that staff will coordinate with the county, which has already completed resilience planning work, to avoid duplicating effort. “As we go through that facilities condition assessment,” Hepburn said, “we’ll see what the next steps are to initiate an assessment like that.”
Board members pressed for clarity on next steps and whether the board’s direction should be formalized. Several members, including Board Member Sarah Leonardi, sought a quick start; others cautioned that staff already have a heavy schedule and that the FCA should inform priorities. School General Counsel Mary Batista said staff can bring a plan back for board review; legal counsel clarified that if the board collectively directs the superintendent to begin a plan this workshop discussion can serve as guidance, but formal actions that obligate funds will require a subsequent board item.
