Task Force votes to recommend City Council apply for state beach maintenance reimbursement for FY2026

The Task Force voted by voice to recommend that City Council submit an application to the General Land Office (GLO) for state assistance from the Beach Maintenance Reimbursement Fund for fiscal year 2026.

Staff described the request as the annual application to help offset routine, day-to-day beach maintenance costs. "This is just our annual application, to receive some funding from the GLO for our daily day to day beach maintenance," a staff member said. The presenter said the next fiscal year begins in August and that award amounts "vary" between coastal communities; the staff member did not specify the expected award amount or the city's historical reimbursement totals.

The exchange included a public comment noting that recently improved beach accesses were well used. A resident said, "The beach looks good. The accesses I walked by lately ... people sure use those beach accesses," underscoring the local use that maintenance funding is meant to support.

The Task Force handled routine business on a consent agenda before the funding recommendation. The consent motion approved five items, including minutes from the regular May 18 meeting and the special May 20 meeting and approvals of absences for Task Force members Murphy and Fox. Those consent items were adopted by voice vote; no roll-call tallies or dollar figures were given in the meeting record.

The Task Force's approval of the recommendation does not itself award funds; staff said the GLO divides available funding among applying coastal communities. The item will move to City Council for final approval of the city's application submission.

The meeting was brief and adjourned immediately after the Task Force completed the regular agenda.
