Parks & Rec reports record enrollment, adaptive programs and fall events; pool equipment due in October

At the Sept. 27 meeting the Orange City Parks & Recreation (OC E and R) director reported growth in programs and registrations and outlined fall programming and facility timelines, including trunk-or-treat, outdoor adventure days, adaptive recreation and a large children's theatre production.
Parks & Recreation said it will host a resident-only trunk-or-treat on Friday, Oct. 28, from 6 to 9 p.m.; preregistration and a $10 per-family fee will be used to support the department's OCR scholarship fund. The department also described adaptive recreation offerings this fall (20 classes serving about 96 participants, plus plans to hire a part-time coordinator) and said adult recreation enrollment has risen: 67 adult classes are offered this fall with 167 adult registrations.
Stagecrafters Theatre's Frozen Junior will have the largest enrollment in more than a decade, the department said, with 150 children cast in grades K through 7 and double casting across multiple performances in January. The director said pre-pandemic comparisons show a 36 percent increase in courses offered and a 30 percent increase in registrations compared with 2018-19; unique users rose about 6 percent.
On facilities, the recreation director said pool equipment is scheduled for delivery in October but construction is expected to start in late February or early March because the state Department of Health approval process is delayed; the department expects work to be completed before June of the following year, assuming timely state approvals. The department asked the board for continued support in hiring before/after-school specialists, sports staff for nights/weekends and lifeguards.
The board received the report and approved related personnel items in the consent agenda; no separate action was required for the program updates.
