Carbon County shelter reports steady adoptions, continued donations; one part-time K‑9 vacancy

At the June 3 Carbon County Animal Shelter Advisory Commission meeting at 44 Susquehanna Street, Tom, the shelter director, reported recent intake, adoption and donation figures and said the shelter is actively recruiting to fill one vacant part‑time K‑9 officer position.
Tom told the commission that for the April reporting period the shelter received $2,736 in donated food — including a large pallet from FreshPak — and reported $20,091 in supplies. The shelter operates 16 kennels; the April report listed 22 dogs at the start of the month and 16 at month’s end, with seven adoptions, one owner surrender and eight dogs returned to owners. The report also listed "dogs we owned instead of shelter" as 10.
Tom provided May figures as well: food donations totaled $5,141 (another FreshPak delivery), supplies $2,658, 16 kennels in use, 16 dogs at the start of the month and 15 at the end, nine adoptions, two owner surrenders, four dogs returned to owners and a peak of 18 dogs in care at one time. Police calls and after‑hours calls rose from earlier months; Tom reported 11 police calls and nine after‑hours calls for May.
On staffing, Tom said the shelter continues to have one vacant part‑time K‑9 officer position and that an application has been received; interviews will be scheduled. He also reported work orders in progress for ceiling repairs in the kennel area and awaited installation of recently surveyed security cameras. The commission was told the last three kennel doors needed had been ordered and are expected to arrive.
Commissioners did not take formal action on the items in Tom’s report during the meeting; the director’s updates were provided for the commission’s information.
