The Arts Commission on June 5 received an update from Vietkha Do, the community arts coordinator overseeing arts education, on spring activities and upcoming summer offerings.
Do said the Cultural Arts Office runs several school-targeted programs: Explore More (formerly the three-part art program) for second and third graders, the California History and Art Program (CHAP) for fourth graders that includes a visit to Leo Carrillo Ranch, and Club Pelican, a one-week STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) program for ages 7–11 with multiple sessions.
"We have several different programs that target elementary school age children," Vietkha Do said, describing partnerships with schools and the library to provide in-class materials, gallery experiences and library cards for students who participate in some programs.
Do described off-site community outreach, artist residencies and partnerships that culminate in public performances or workshops. She said the department coordinates communications with schools via direct emails to teachers and administrators and works with the city communications team for public outreach including e-newsletters, rack cards and social media.
Program highlights and logistics - Explore More: Rebranded from the traditional three-part model after teacher feedback to reduce in-class workload while retaining enrichment resources for further classroom activities. - CHAP: Fourth graders tour Leo Carrillo Ranch and participate in historical and hands-on stations. - Club Pelican: One-week STEAM program with three sessions; city funds busing for Title I schools that participate. - Artist residencies and Pop Up Art: A two-day residency with video-game-music designer Jessica Fichaud and return of Pop Up Art to TGIF (with support from the Carlsbad Library and Arts Foundation).
Commissioner concerns and follow-up Commissioners asked about outreach effectiveness and communications; staff said they coordinate monthly with communications and maintain direct school contacts. Commissioners suggested the communications team present to the commission on distribution strategies. Do said parental consent is required before issuing library cards to students on field trips.
No actions were taken; the presentation was informational.
