Council approves additional leave for school resource officers

The Brigham City Council approved a revision to the cityemployee policy manual to provide an additional 40 hours of leave for school resource officers (SROs).
City administrators explained the SRO assignment frequently requires an 8-hour, school-day schedule that differs from typical patrol shift patterns, and some officers decline the posting for scheduling reasons. The policy change awards each SRO an additional 40 hours of police leave on May 1 of each calendar year; the leave must be used by April 30 of the following year and is forfeited if the officer leaves the SRO assignment or city employment. The school district pays half of the salary costs for the SRO positions, staff said.
Council adopted the chapter-9 revision by voice vote. Staff said departmental policy can guide scheduling so the added leave does not disrupt school coverage and the new language will be incorporated into the policy manual.
