Commission staff can provide support letters for projects in regional plan; members urged to comment on Last Chance Grade funding

Commissioner Dooley urged colleagues to call in and make brief public comments to the state commission, noting the meetings are long and public comments are limited to 60 seconds.
Tamara (commission staff) clarified the commission’s practice on letters of support: for projects already included in the Regional Transportation Plan, staff have authority to write letters of support without placing each letter on a commission agenda. Tamara said a letter signed by the commission chair represents the commission and would require an agenda item; however, a staff-signed support letter for an RTP project does not require separate commission approval. She also noted that if staff time or funding contributions are requested, those actions would require inclusion in the work program or formal commission approval.
Tamara said the county Board of Supervisors plans to take up a letter of support as well, and that Caltrans District 1 staff will collect letters and present them to the California Transportation Commission as part of the funding request for Last Chance Grade design. Commissioners expressed support for moving the project toward design funding.
