Commission forwards UNR Nevada Water Innovation Institute scope and funding recommendation of $612,654 to WRWC; routine agenda items approved

At its June 4 meeting the Northern Nevada Water Planning Commission approved several routine items and unanimously forwarded a recommendation to the Western Regional Water Commission (WRWC) to approve a scope of work and funding for the University of Nevada, Reno's Nevada Water Innovation Institute (NWI).
Kim Rigdon, commission staff, described the proposed interlocal agreement scope and three‑year funding plan supported in the commission's priority setting; she said the total not to exceed amount is $612,654 and that annual funding would be brought back through the priority‑setting process.
Commissioner John Enloe moved the recommendation. "I move that the NNWPC forward a recommendation to the WRWC for approval of UNR's INWI scope of work and funding not to exceed $612,654 from the regional water management fund in accordance with the fiscal year funding as shown in the staff report," Enloe read. Commissioner Flansberg seconded. The motion passed unanimously.
Earlier in the meeting the commission approved the agenda (motion by Commissioner Flansberg, second by Vice Chair Melton) and approved minutes from the May 7, 2025 meeting (motion by Commissioner Flansberg, second by Commissioner Sosa); both motions passed unanimously. The commission also set its next meeting for Aug. 6 at 1:30 p.m. in the Washoe County Commission Chambers (motion by Commissioner Flansberg, second by Commissioner Crump), which passed unanimously.
Rigdon and commissioners noted that the NWI has provided technical assistance since 2017 on regional projects including American Flat and advanced purified water studies and that the institute has been flexible in adding tasks as projects evolve. Commissioners who spoke expressed support for continuing the interlocal agreement because of the university's technical capacity.
