Board holds first reading of redistricting policy change; staff to return with revised language

The Las Cruces Public Schools Board of Education took up a first reading of proposed changes to policy JCAA (school attendance zones and redistricting) at its June 3 work session. The administrative presentation said the proposed language would require an annual review of attendance zone boundaries and would allow adjustments based on enrollment trends, residential development and other changes.
Ms. O'Brien (district staff) presented the draft language and board members discussed sequence and phrasing. Member Tenorio suggested removing the phrase "as necessary" from the draft for clarity; staff and board members preferred removing the adjective "micro" from the phrase "micro enrollment trends" to avoid minimizing effects on families. The administration agreed they would flip the order of two subsections (B and C) so the annual review language reads more clearly and would bring the revised text back for a second reading at the next board meeting.
No vote was taken during the first reading. The administration said the revised regulation would be returned for a second reading and potential adoption at a future meeting.
