The Grosse Ile Greenways Open Space Committee reviewed a quote to replace or install six identification signs across township open-space properties and discussed enforcement and messaging ahead of installation.
Committee members said the signs will list permissible uses and cite township ordinances such as the prohibition on firearms and dumping, hours (open dawn to dusk), leash requirements for dogs and prohibitions on motorized vehicles except as permitted by the ADA. The committee noted earlier vandalism to a small number of newly posted signs and said the current signs are intentionally modest in size and wording.
The committee reported a vendor quote of $3,277 for six new signs, including posts and installation; two of the six are new locations and four are replacements. The vendor named in the meeting packet was the same local sign company that has made prior signs for the township. Committee members said the signs will identify trails such as Ferry Gauge, Manor Woods and Meridian/Manchester sites and will include acreage and a short description of the property where available.
Members discussed whether electric bicycles and other motorized devices should be specifically discouraged; one committee member noted that, while ebikes are not classified as motorized vehicles in some rules, they can travel at higher speeds and cause safety or trail-surface damage. The committee agreed signage and outreach should discourage risky trail use and request that visitors carry out trash.
Next steps: staff will follow up with the vendor to obtain a schedule for fabrication and installation; the committee will finalize exact text and acreage figures for each sign prior to production.
