Council hears final rendering and funding plan for hotel mural in Lakefront District

Staff said the mural design reflects lakefront branding and will include a branded “Lakefront Sun” element. The artist team includes Olive, who previously painted a mural at The Cove, and Tony, a visiting artist whose prior work includes projects for private brands; staff noted Tony was connected to the hotel owner and this will be his first piece in Little Elm.
Staff said the mural location and design went through the town’s application and committee review process and that the project will be funded from the town’s art installation fund (identified in the workshop as TERS 3). If council gives approval, staff said work would begin on June 9.
Staff discussed maintenance: the hotel and the town will split maintenance responsibilities and costs 50/50, and the artist projected touch-ups every three to five years. Staff said a small maintenance allocation already exists in the art fund.
Council members asked about opportunities for more public art, the program’s zoning changes to allow public-art standards in the Lakefront District, and average mural lifespan; staff said the zoning was updated to accommodate public art and described past public-art projects on electrical boxes and other town infrastructure.
No formal council vote on the mural was recorded in the workshop transcript; staff requested the council’s “blessing” and indicated the project would proceed with council approval.
