Parks trades outline maintenance projects, playground replacements and ADA work

Steve Glimp, manager of Parks and Grounds Maintenance, and Travis Rich, facilities field supervisor, told the commission about recent and upcoming maintenance and construction work across city parks.
Rich described the trades crew’s roles: fencing, welding, playground repairs, plumbing for drinking fountains and splash pads, graffiti removal, concrete and block work, and other facility repairs. “Simply said, I have a boss, a former boss, Adrian, that would always say that the parks trades is responsible for everything other than the grass and trees,” Rich said.
Recent projects Rich highlighted include the Floyd Lamb horse corral and arena cleanup, a new playground at Stewart Place, and resurfacing and striping at Cimarron Rose (adding pickleball lines and multiuse court markings). He said crews have begun work at Sky Ridge Playground and the Children’s Memorial Playground and expect to finish by the end of summer.
Glimp and Rich discussed next fiscal-year goals including tennis-court resurfacing at Aloha Shores and Bob Baskin, replacing shade structures and some pavilions, adding fencing for field security, upsizing a recirculation pump at Floyd Lamb to improve flow and oxygenation, and installing more rubber surfacing to meet ADA needs at playgrounds.
Commissioners asked for timing and follow-up. Commissioner Burgos thanked staff for work at Floyd Lamb. Commissioner Cornwell asked about a plan for the James Guy Center area and was told the department is evaluating priorities and will present projects in the next fiscal-year plan, and that staff can meet offline to review needs. Commissioner Vocus asked about Craig and Park; Deputy Director Pat O’Mara said the project is a Public Works project and is on track to reopen at or near the start of the school year.
Why it matters: the trades section maintains park infrastructure used daily by residents; stated goals include repair and ADA upgrades that affect accessibility and safety.
No formal action was taken on the maintenance report; staff said they would continue to coordinate with commissioners on site-specific plans.
