Parent urges Beacon schools to retain diversity, equity and inclusion practices

Alexandra Devon, a parent of a fourth-grade student at Sergeant Elementary and a volunteer with the nonprofit Defense of Democracy, used the public-comment period to support the district's inclusive practices and to praise staff who provided accommodations for her daughter.
"I support New York's decision to refuse to end diversity, equity and inclusion practices in our schools," Devon said, referring to a federal directive she described as requiring schools to sign statements ending DEI practices or risk federal funding loss. She told the board she appreciated Beacon's continued inclusion and cited her daughter's 504 plan and classroom accommodations as examples of equitable supports.
Devon described equity as "the guarantee of fair treatment, access, opportunity, and advancement for all" and said that inclusion in Beacon schools had helped her daughter's confidence through special education services, specials teachers and club advisors. She thanked teachers, staff, the superintendent and the board for their support.
