Library reports May circulation, summer programs and planned facility projects; a staff member has resigned

Gwen, library manager, reported May circulation totals to the Los Alamos County Library Board and outlined program and facility work planned for the summer.
For May, the library recorded 23,526 print checkouts and 8,983 digital checkouts; Gwen said digital circulation represented roughly 28 percent of total circulation. Board members were told summer-reading activities began the day of the meeting; Gwen reported initial sign-ups of 40 adults, seven teens and 37 youth.
Gwen detailed recent and planned programs: a drumming circle by Unidrums at White Rock, a Wise Fool Circus Troupe appearance that must be rescheduled, and new recurring youth opportunities including a Tuesday “creative studio” at Mesa and a Wednesday “read with a ranger/chef/dentist”-style program at White Rock. The library also reported drawing about 200 graduating seniors to a “senior appreciation night.”
On facility work, Gwen said Mesa Public Library will receive a front-garden refresh, new bike racks, a bike repair station and benches; a sound study to examine acoustics and improve study-room quiet was scheduled to start the month of the meeting. The library plans to present the outdoor-classroom design and estimated costs at a future meeting and will ask the board for formal support for that project at that time.
Gwen announced a staffing change: Daniel Gagan resigned and accepted a position with Pikes Peak Library District; the library will begin a national recruitment for his replacement and expected to post the vacancy within one to two weeks.
Gwen shared two items of patron feedback she said the staff received: a note left in tech services that read, "this place is amazing. Keep up the good work. I love the staff the most and the books," and a message from a parent of a neurodivergent middle-grade child who said the family felt welcomed and supported by library staff; Gwen reported the child told staff, "working at the library must be pure heaven." Gwen offered to answer board questions about any of the items she summarized.
Board members asked about timing of public outreach events and about the library’s scheduled presentations to the Inclusivity Task Force; Gwen and staff will confirm dates and logistics.
