At a special meeting called at City Hall, the Wausau Room Tax Commission approved a $6,500 tourism grant for Wausau Bridal, an event scheduled the weekend of June 7. The commission acted after staff said an application submitted before the deadline failed to upload because of file-size limits and was later recovered for consideration.
Commission Chair opened the meeting saying the commission had one agenda item: “item 1, discussion and possible action regarding tourism grant requests applications,” and noted the submission system had “choked on” a large file. Staff later reported the file‑size issue had been resolved so the application could be reviewed before the event.
The grant request drew discussion about the event’s history, marketing and likely hotel impacts. Mr. White, who said he was representing Wausau Bridal, told commissioners that “last year, at least 1,500 people were downtown, and then, at least a thousand people,” and that organizers planned both a daytime family event on the 400 Block and an evening program at the Expo Center. He said the event’s combination of daytime and evening activities is “very unique” and that organizers expected to expand marketing if additional funds were available.
Alder Rasmussen moved to approve the application; Alder Hakey seconded. Commissioners discussed verifying hotel room blocks and whether nearby Rothschild would capture most overnight stays. One commissioner noted Jefferson Street had a 20‑room block while organizers anticipated far more rooms in use; another suggested Rothschild is likely the primary location for overnight visitors while Wausau’s daytime activities would be secondary.
The commission approved the $6,500 grant. Chair called for those in favor to “say aye,” and the motion carried. The meeting then adjourned.
The commission’s action covers only the one grant application presented at the meeting; commissioners said they will review event data from this year to inform future awards and will relay comments about room‑night verification and event geography back to the applicant committee.
